Born in 1940 in the little town of Mount Hope, West Virginia, Carol Lee is part Cherokee Native American and part Scotch-Irish. From West Virginia, she moved to Perryville, Maryland after high school and began working at the PX on Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland where she met the author. They got married on July 13, 1963 and in September of 1966, their only child, David, was born.
